What is a BMX Sprocket and What Does it Do?
BMX sprocket is the round shaped disc with "teeth" that is attached to the cranks of your BMX bike. Teeth on a BMX sprocket are used to catch on to the chain that is put on the rear wheel and the sprocket allowing the rider to spin the rear wheel when pedaling. Sprocket is a very crucial part of your BMX set-up and can come in many different sizes, designs and colour-ways.
Sprockets are made up of either steel or aluminium. Steel sprockets are stronger and more affordable however, they tend to be a lot heavier. Aluminium sprockets on the other hand provide you with a great strength to weight ratio. They maintain the strength significantly while reducing the weight by a significant amount. Also for all of the riders out there that are into grinding on their cranks and have a very intense riding style.. It is useful to invest in a sprocket guard that will protect your sprocket from any excess damage.
What Sprocket Size Do I Need?
The sprocket size really depends on your style and preference. Sprocket sizes are measured by the amount of teeth on the sprocket.. The more teeth on the sprocket the longer and harder it is to spin the sprocket however, you will be able to gather more speed with time. The most common sprocket size is 25T-28T however, sizes can range from 16T to even 45T in some cases.
